When it comes to some of the popular recipes which are lightweight and tummy-filling, then you have many options ,including Idli . Most of us correlate Idli to Southern India, but actually, the dish originated in Indonesia and from there it came to India.  According to historian K.T. Acharya, Idli was a dish from Indonesia and it came to India between 800-1200 CE.

Apart from that, according to Vaddaradhane written by Shivakotiacharya, Idli was known as Iddalage and it was a Kannada word. Later, it was popular in the other parts of India, and you can find a similar recipe in Manasollasa written by Someshvara, which is a Sanskrit text.

Another common belief about the origin of Idli is that it was brought to India by Arab traders. Arab traders were very strict about their diet, and they always maintained traditional Islamic laws. They made rice ball recipes and they used to have such rice balls with coconut gravy. But such rice cakes were slightly different than today’s Idli. So there are different opinions available and most of the historians believe that Idli is an Indonesian dish which was brought to India during the reign of Hindu rulers.

We have a popular variation of Idli recipe and that is the use of rava. Rava Idli is also known as instant Idli. According to some sources, Rava Idli was invented during World War-II in Karnataka. Even you will be surprised to know that The Defense Food Research Laboratory has developed Space Idli for the astronauts as a part of India’s first space mission.

If you are in a rush and are looking for a healthy eating option, then you must try making idli . It is easy to make , moreover, you can have several variations in the batter like adding some veggies to it, which makes it healthier. You can serve it with different kinds of chutneys like, tomato, tamarind, coconut or Sambar. If you want to reduce your weight then you can try Idli recipe with sambar because sambar is made with different kinds of vegetables and it is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and fibres.

Nutrition value of Idli:

Each plain Idli contains 39 calories, 2gm proteins and dietary fiber, and 8gm carbohydrates. It does not contain any unsaturated fat and it is an ideal dish for health conscious people. Especially, children and older people can have Idli at their breakfast, because they have a low immune system and they can easily digest such foods within a few minutes.  

You cannot find similar taste in Idlis offered by different states in India, and Idli is known as different names in different parts of India. For example, this dish is known as Sanna in Karnataka and Hittli in Konkani. However, if you want to experiment with making idli  then you can add more ingredients in your dish and you can also serve it wrapped with banana leaves.  All-in-all eat this wholesome food and satiate your delectable desires.
